  • Building Product grown by MissouriFarmers
  • that could be used by MissouriCraftsmen

 to build Missouri Homes

  • This is the Ultimate in Buying Local!

I’m from a farming/ranching background and now in the Construction Business.  I’ve been following how the hemp plant fibers can be utilized to build highly energy efficient homes when they are mixed a couple of natural products.

One of the products I’ve been following is called hempcrete.  It has the strength of concrete and is also energy efficient and removes and traps carbon from the air as it ages.  This to me is the ultimate in sustainability for future Missouri Homes and Buildings.

I’ve also be researching how:

  1. hemp seeds can be turned into a form of oil and can be used as a bio diesel product for the transportation industry.
  2. I’ve also seen a video by Henry Ford that showed he used the fibers from a plant to make early auto parts that were strong enough to take a blow from a hammer without damage.

I’d like to see the State of Missouri Leading on the use of the industrial hemp plant-instead of falling behind other states and countries where it is working to create Sustainable Lifestyle.  Scotty

In my quest to promote affordable sustainable buildings for the St Louis region has lead me to discover a new building product that provides high Rvalue for energy efficiency and has the strength of concrete!

Hemp Home Catalan Brick Vaulted Ceiling with Hempcrete Layer and Waterproofing-No Lumber Needed for Roof

And when I learned that this revolutionary building product could be locally grown I believe I stumbled upon a viable solution that exceeds the needs of the growing Sustainable Driven Community.

Hempcrete Brick Wall Retrofit

Designed by Scotty- Stucco Like Finish Coat for Hempcrete Brick Wall Retrofit

One of the issues I’ve found while working on the brick buildings in the StLouis Region is the challenge of having adequate insulation on the exterior walls of the Masonry Structures.

These CAD designs by Scotty is one of the latest designs reflecting how this insulation could be installed over a Grid of #4 structural reinforcement.

Hemp Plant Fibers are a natural product

that can be grown and sourced

                        from Missouri Farmers.

Hempcrete is as strong as Concrete with less damaging effects to our climate and provides a High RValue while adding Structural Reinforcement.

Stay Tuned for more information.  I will soon be posting information from a Sustainable Builder who has been involved in the Hemp Building Industry in Europe.

Mr Greg Flavall,  has given these suggestions:
    • Depending on age of buildings u can ascertain whether lime mortar was used or cement. Older buildings used lime in which case u could add hemp/lime “plaster ” to exterior or interior to increase efficiency as we have done many times in Europe. If cement forget it; you’re asking for problems.
    • In UK we have had problems in the early days adding hempcrete to cement mortared brick clad buildings bc they do not breathe and the hemp has deteriorated;…
    • Also u can use an alkali resistant mesh cloth embedded into the Hempcrete for added flexural strength and no need for steel reinforcing unless you are horizontally affixing steel plates to retain brick structure

Exterior Wheelchair Ramp CAD Design by Scotty-Scotts Contracting

My current project has a couple of phases of projects.  The first exterior project is adding wheelchair access to the front of this property located in #StLouis, MO.

After pricing a few of the electric wheel chair and stair lifts on the market, I found the prices start at $2,500 to $6,000-(each system has benefits and drawbacks).  Unfortunately, I learned that the costs of automatic systems are more than this clients budget can allow.  The clients eyes lit-up when I mentioned that we can build a ramp that will save him money and work within his budget.

To build a proper ADA complaint Wheel Chair Ramp I looked up the Specs and learned:

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) provides Wheelchair Ramp Specification and access guidelines that most business are required to meet. Most residential applications do not need to meet ADA guidelines, but they are a good reference point for recommended ramp lengths.  Most businesses, churches, schools and other organizations must comply with-

ADA Specifications and ADA guidelines for handicapped wheelchair ramp access.

  • 1:12 slope ratio which works out to be one foot of wheelchair ramp for each inch of rise. For instance, a 20 inch rise requires a 20 foot wheelchair ramp.
  • Minimum 5’ x 5’ Flat area at the top and bottom of the ramp.
  • Minimum 36 inches of clear space across the wheelchair ramp.
  • Minimum Platform size is 5’ x 5’
  • Maximum of 30 feet in a single run of wheelchair ramp prior to a rest or turn platform.
  • Handrails on both sides of the wheelchair ramp

See Scotts Contracting Google Plus Photo Album for additional Build Notes

Final Build Notes will be added at a later date as I am designing an Interior Option that would act as an elevator or chairlift from the Garage up to the main level in the home.

Thank you for stopping by St Louis Renewable Energy. Feel free to comment in the section below or contact Scotts Contracting- for any St Louis Home Improvement Projects
